HOT TOPIC: Athletes to Watch
Volume 2, Issue 19 - January 29, 2006
"It's finally snowing in Turin, and just in time! 12-16 inches of snow should fall by the end of today. With 2,500 athletes and officials from 85 countries, seven sports (Biathlon, Bobsleigh, Curling, Ice Hockey, Luge, Skating, Skiing – fifteen events total) being played at eight venues (Bardonecchia, Pinerolo, Pragelato, Cesana-Pariol, Cesana-San Sicario, Sauze d'Oulx, Sestriere, and Torino) viewed by 650 judges and referees and more than 10,000 journalists and media representatives, when else does the world come together so peacefully, with such pride and enthusiasm, to celebrate the accomplishments of human spirit, mind and body?
In this final January issue dedicated to the Olympics, I am featuring the athletes to watch in the 2006 games. I have selected them for their human interest value as much as their potential to be champions. To bone up on the US teams specifically, check out Biathlon http://www.usbiathlon.org/, Bobsled and Skeleton http://www.usbsf.com/, Ski http://www.usskiteam.com/public/, Curling http://www.usacurl.org/, Skating http://www.usfsa.org/ and http://www.usspeedskating.org/, Hockey http://www.usahockey.com/ and Luge http://www.usaluge.org/.
Please also find attached two activity sheets for following the games: a medals sheet to follow each country’s victories at the games and an athlete profile sheet that encourages each student to research an athlete and bring together all the pertinent information about his/her performance at the games. There’s even provisions for inserting images and including contact information! I hope you’ll be able to make use of all these resources. Let the games begin!"
