HOT TOPIC: Logic and Reasoning
Volume 2, Issue 20 - February 5, 2006
"Years ago as a teacher, offering higher level thinking activities meant everything from using creative dramatics to act out simulations in the classroom to black line master collections of syllogisms and logic puzzles. Tapping into resources on critical thinking and problem solving was not an easy task. If the teacher was especially strong in reasoning and logic, his or her activities reflected that strength.
The resources now available online for teachers and their students really level the playing field for all classrooms, regardless of how innovative or creative a teacher may be in engaging students in higher order thinking. Why reinvent the wheel when there is a wealth of quality resources available online, many of which are totally Web-based and ready to use?
This week’s collection of activities focus on logic and reasoning skills, running the gamut from units of instruction to ready-to-play browser-based games. And there’s something here for everyone from Social Studies simulations to Math mindbenders accommodating many different learning modalities. Half of these resources can be adapted for use from elementary through high school, and only four of the twelve deal directly with mathematics as a discipline. The result is a well-rounded collection of learning experiences designed to exercise logic and reasoning skills within all of your students.
Whether you are logical by nature or not, I think you’ll find these resources fun and intriguing. I know I did. Enjoy!"
