Walter's reply.....

Kate if your assignment requires you to cite Gardner only for those intelligences which he has officially recognized, then you are best served referring to eight intelligences. From a purely academic research perspective, this is correct. I base my inclusion of the ninth intelligence on Gardner's lectures, discussion with other leaders in the MI field, and with Gardner's published work discussing the ninth intelligence.

Keep in mind that Dr. Gardner himself is not comfortable with being labeled a guru for a trendy educational concept. He is open to the potential of his theory for all kinds of learning implications. If MI is a model of how learning truly occurs, then shouldn't we be looking at ways to implement Gardner's model which are inclusive of all paths to learning?

My work is with educators, and I bring the Existential intelligence into the mix because Gardner has all but named it a ninth intelligence, but even more importantly because it exists within students that teachers reach every day whether or not it has been pronounced as such as of yet. Hope that helps!
