Before Thomas Jefferson became president he served as George Washington's Secretary of State and John Adams' Vice President. He was elected president in 1801.During his presidency he completed the Louisiana Purchase which doubled the size of America. Jefferson served two terms in office where he was best know as the author of the Declaration of Independence.
