Thomas Jefferson was born on April 13, 1743 on Shadwell plantation in Goochland County, Virginia. He married his wife Martha on January 1, 1772 and they moved into a one-room brick house on Jefferson's plantation called Monticello. Jefferson and his slaves worked to build on the house and much of the furniture inside it. Thomas Jefferson retired to his Monticello home after serving two terms as president.
