| Harry's father was a farmer and a cattle trader in Grandview, Missouri. The picture to the left is a photo of Harry's farmhouse. Harry and his brother had a dog named Tandy. They also had a cat named Bob. Both animals followed the boys around their farm. By the time he started school, Harry could already read a book. He loved to read the bible and was a Baptist. By the time he was just fourteen years old, Harry had read all of the books in the town public library. His favorite author was Mark Twain. Harry always had good grades too. |

When he was nine,
Harry had to wear very thick glasses, because his eyes were were not good.
He liked different sports, but his poor vision kept him from playing. Later,
he caught diphtheria. That was a disease that gave a very high fever,
and Harry was sick for many months. He had to go to school at home.
He studied so hard that he was able to skip the 3rd grade. His best
subject was history. He also loved to play the piano and practiced very
hard every day. His favorite composers were Chopin and Mozart.
Harry graduated from Independence High School in 1901. Even
though Harry became the President of the United States, his life as a young
boy was just like any other boy his age.
