Our heartiest CONGRATULATIONS go out to Jim Oehlschlaeger, our number one Ohio musher. We were with you all the way Jim! We are very very proud of you and your dogs. What a wonderful accomplishment. Our Resource Room students learned to put themselves in Jim's place. Fighting the elements was hard for Jim as reading is hard for us. Jim taught us a valuable lesson, never, never give up.He proved this to us by finishing what he started. We have been concentrating on our reading in that same way and seeing great results. My what motivation can do!
During this month we studied the history of the Iditarod. Watching movies and reading books helped us to understand the reasons behind the race. We set up our bulletin board to keep track of Jim on our map. We wrote to Jim at almost every checkpoint. We illuustrated what we thought Jim and his team would look like at various places during the race.Word got around the school of what we were doing and we had several opportunities to share our knowledge with other classes. The most exciting part for us was to come to school each day and check Jim's progress on the computer. We have become friends without even meeting. Our class truely rooted for Jim, worried about him when checking weather reports, and let out a great cheer when we came in Monday to find he had reached Nome!!
We can't wait to do this again next year. We will add more video of the race and make use of more of the great resources available to us. Jim, if you race next year you can count on us! Thank you so much for this wonderful opportunity. Have a great year.
