Summer Reading
for Teachers

Volume 5, Issue 23 - June 1, 2003

Innovative staff development:

Curriculum Integration and Creative Education.
Let's see what we can do for your staff!

Here is our first suggested summer reading list for teachers. I hope it will become an annual newsletter event! Interestingly enough, I received recommendations that addressed both pleasure reading and professional topics, so this month's newsletter is divided evenly between these two categories of reading: 20 titles each. Whether you're looking for an escape or a chance to broaden yourself professionally, the choices are contained herein!

Thanks to each and every one of you who made recommendations on best books. I think we've got a nice cross-section of genres and authors. Links are provided for quick online ordering. I recommend Barnes & Noble as they tend to have the fastest turnaround time for getting books in your hands. Of course, you can look up these titles on your favorite book seller's site. Dig right in and enjoy!

All of this leads me to ask once you consume this issue: would you be interested in starting a free teachers' book club discussion list? It would be a convenient vehicle for continuing to share great titles all year long. No required reading or obligation to respond - just an opportunity to plug in and share the wealth as each subscriber comes across a great new title. Drop me an email at walter@surfaquarium.com if you would be interested in subscribing to such a list. Thanks!

Flashback
by Nevada Barr
-
http://search.barnesandnoble.com/booksearch/isbnInquiry.asp?userid=2W6OM7P3I7&ISBN=0399149759&itm=1

"I strongly recommend the series by Nevada Barr, starting with Track of the Cat and ending with her most recent release, Flashback. Nevada Barr was a National Park Ranger and her books feature a different National Park each time with one exception - the Natchez Trace Park is featured in two books. Her descriptions of the parks almost makes you feel like you've been there - perfect when circumstances prevent you from taking a vacation to that location. The heroine of the series, Anna Pigeon, is believable and deals with many issues that women will relate to. (I can't speak for the men on this.) Ms. Pigeon finds herself investigating murders and other mayhem, fighting with the bureaucracy, and dealing with alcoholism, widowhood, dating, and the aging process."

-M. Sue Way
