With the holidays approaching, November is an especially opportune time to deliver an ITN an issue on digital clip art for teachers. I still have huge bound copies of clip art that I paid $10-$15 for ten years ago. I would photocopy a page of assorted characters, cut out the exact image I wanted, scotch tape it down to my mock up of my newsletter, and then head back to the photocopier. My how far we've come!
The offering of clip art below includes free educationally-related images ready for you to save and insert into your word processing and web page files as needed! To save an image, simply place the cursor on the image and click the right mouse key (hold down the single muse button firmly on a Mac) so that a popup menu appears. From the popup, select Save Image As and then indicate where you would like to save the image on your computer.
The most popular image formats for most applications are .gif and .jpg. The .gif format is great for drawings and animations. The. jpg format is great for photographs. When you delve into high quality images for publishing, the .tif format is often preferred. All this having been said, it is best to stay away from images in older or more proprietary formats. Bitmaps (.bmp) are low quality and excessively large in file size. Other formats such as .art and .pic are fine in limited uses but are not optimal for publishing online or off. Of course, with graphics editors coming down in price, you can afford Photoshop Elements or Paint Shop Pro for $100 or less and be able to use any image format, crop it, resize it, colorize it, and save it in any format in a few quick clicks! I hope you'll enjoy the clip art issue and find many uses for it throughout the rest of the school year.
